A few of today’s mega billionaires are very special; they
didn’t get wealthy from trade or exploitation of opportunities and openings
(mainly). Instead, they built their wealth in a previously untreated quest; the
quest of the nerd.
The way I see it, this means 2 things:
- These people are smart.
- They are most probably less tainted than other self-built billionaires
What this means for us? It means that they eventually realize
a good cause to employ their wealth. A true bottom line. And they go for it.
After all, how many individuals can claim a true ability to mold and carve up the
future according to a vision they have?
Here are 3 of these:
Bill Gates
The most well-known nerd billionaire, founder of Microsoft
turned philanthropist. Bill & Melinda Gates foundation has been working
with Africa and tackling charity challenges for a long time now. Not only that,
he has been doing rounds to convince other billionaires to give up the majority
of their wealth to the needy. What’s better than having the world’s richest man
working on the side of the greater good?
Elon Musk
He is the founder of Paypal service, who made a lot of money
selling it to Ebay. Elon is trying to change the world harder than anybody
else. He didn’t put his wealth to any other use but to found 3 revolutionary
companies:
- Tesla Motors: All-electric cars that can perform. Tesla already debuted and is present in the USA. While still in its infancy, this is the seed of a future without gasoline
- Space X: one of the first non-governmental companies to try to start taking contracts for space deliveries and transits, the start of commercializing space travel and civil entry into space.
- Solar City: solar energy applications
Beyond that, his greater vision includes building cities in
space. With serious money being put behind his vision, it might become more
than just retro-future fiction.
Mark Zuckerburg
You probably read the news. Facebook founder and his wife now have a
baby girl, and he decides to give away the larger share of his wealth
(somewhere around 45 billion US dollars) to the greater good. Since this news
is too fresh, we still don’t know in clear details how this is going to go. But
given his young age, with a direction of thought like this, and an aspiration
for a better world that goes beyond daydreaming, this can really change things
quickly.
Worth mentioning, Dubai, and United Arab Emirates in general is trying harder than anybody else to become the city of the future, through devoting resources and huge attention
to renewable resources of energy and recycling, a subject rarely addressed in
the region. All respect goes to its leaders and visionaries, who are seizing the
moment to categorically upgrade their nation's rank. But that said, many
billionaires in the Middle East have started and developed great businesses in
the past, who could definitely do more in that area than what they are doing
now. We would love to see them take part in shaping a better tomorrow.
