Play Old Classics On Windows 7/8 with Your Friends (Possibly)

Fancy a network game of Doom/ Hexan/ Starcraft 1? Two methods below may help you.

Method 1 - IPX Wrapper (The easier method)

  1. Download IPXWrapper. Unzip it.
  2. Copy the 4 DLL files in the folder of the game you want to run.
  3. Run the game, press Ctrl & Tab together, unblock it from Windows Firewall.
  4. Enjoy.
Method 2 - Using DOSBox
  1. Download & install DOSBox from here.
  2. Run DOSBox from the shortcut on your desktop once and close it.
  3. Windows XP: Go to "C:\Documents & Settings\ YourUserFolder\Local Settings\Application Data\DOSBox"
    Windows 7/8: Go to "C:\Users\YourUserFolder\AppData\Local\DOSBox"
  4.  Open dosbox-0.74.conf with Notepad (file name can be different if you get a newer version of DOSBox).
  5. Find the line containing "ipx=false" and change it to "ipx=true". Save & exit. Change nothing else.
  6. Open DOSBox again. type "mount c e:\games\starcraft". Putting the game in an easy location with short folder name will sure help.
  7. If you are going to be the Host/ Server/ the guy who selects the map and how many players:
    1. type "ipx". You should see "true"
    2. type ipxnet startserver 1200"
    3. make sure you unblock dosbox in the firewall notification that shows up.
  8. All the PC's/ laptops of the other players: type "ipxnet connect serverIP 1200". You should get verification. If you don't know the server IP, click here.
  9. All PC's: start the game by typing "c:", push enter, type "starcraft.exe", push enter. Create the game and enjoy.  So far tested Theme hostpital , Dungeon keeper, Startcraft 1

  1. The network being up and running is assumed. This is an entirely different subject that should be detailed separately.
